%X The urbanization process in Brazil, since its beginning, was, generally, marked for the lack of urban planning, resulting in a series of environmental and social issues. In this context, the objective of this work is to investigate the occurrence, what led, and what are the main environment impacts caused by the urban expansion in the cities of Itajubá, Santa Rita do Sapucaí and Pouso Alegre, cities from the south area of the state of Minas Gerais. The study was conducted in an GIS environment, and consisted of the following steps: (i) acquiring LANDSAT 5 and 8 images that covers the three cities for the years of 1984, 1994, 2004 and 2015; (ii) creating a colorful composition of the images; (iii) drawing a shapefile polygon over de built-up areas; (iv) calculating the urban areas; (v) analyzing the temporal evolution of the urban areas. Results show that there was an urban increase in all the analyzed periods in the studied cities. However, when analyzing the urban expansion rate, it was found that: in Itajubá there was a fluctuating growth; in Santa Rita do Sapucaí the growth has remained crescent; in Pouso Alegre, the city with the higher urban area growth, the growth rate has been decreasing. The large built-up areas growth, detected in all of the studied cities, can be, mostly, attributed to the industrialization process, and also due to the concentration of universities in the area, which, both, stimulates people to reallocate themselves in the studied cities.
